Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag Recipe

homemade vanilla ice cream in a bag recipe

Homemade ice cream is a staple of summer. Homemade ice cream in a bag is a must for kids. The ingredients are simple and there’s no special equipment needed. It’s seriously easy.

This homemade ice cream in a bag is one of my kids’ favorite homemade treats, so much so that they make it year round. It’s one of the fun things we’ll be making over spring break. (Learn more about spring break activities for kids here.)

Adding variety

One of the great things about making your own ice cream is that you can add whatever you want! Chocolate syrup? Chocolate chips? Brownie pieces? Sprinkles? Fruit? Yes, yes, and yes.

Here’s my best advice about additives in your ice cream recipe: fold all the extras in at the end. You don’t want anything jeopardizing the consistency or texture of your ice cream base. After your ice cream is thick and creamy though, feel free to add any and all of your favorites!

This homemade ice cream can be a workout

The hardest part of this entire recipe is shaking the bag until your ice cream is the right consistency. The ids never seem to mind and I’d vouch that it’s totally worth it in the end. If you get tired just pass it to someone else for a minute. Or toss it back and forth with a partner.

Keep in mind that this homemade ice cream can also be a great science lesson about property changes for your little ones.

Let’s not waste any more time getting to the recipe.

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream in a Bag

Total Time 20 minutes
Servings 1

Ingredients

  • 1 cup half and half
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 quart ziploc bags
  • 1 gallon ziploc bag
  • 3 cups crushed ice
  • 1/3 cup rock salt

Instructions

  1. Place ice and salt in gallon sized ziploc bag.

  2. Mix half and half, sugar, and vanilla in a quart sized bag and seal tightly. Use the second quart sized bag to double bag the ingredients. Place into gallon sized bag and seal.

  3. Gently shake the bag for 10-15 minutes until ingredients reach the consistency of ice cream.

  4. Open and enjoy.

For smaller children, coffee cans work great in place of ziploc bags. Place ice and salt inside large round coffee tin and ingredients inside small round coffee tin. Place the small tin inside the large tin and allow kids to roll it back and forth for 10-15 minutes until ice cream is formed. Open and share your delicious, homemade ice cream.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31
