The Sugar Coma Is Imminent

Wow! Was Halloween as crazy for y’all as it was for me?

Target costume shopping (2)

As if the time leading up to Halloween isn’t stressful enough for parents whose kids (mine) change their minds every 3 days about what they want to be for Halloween…

the week before was Red Ribbon Week.

I mean, yes. The week before Halloween is probably an optimal time to remind kids not to do drugs. Candy is better. Stick with the candy, kids.

Just Say No To Drugs 2

But every day of Red Ribbon Week is “wear something specific” day and while kids are, of course, not forced to participate, am I even a parent if I don’t run myself ragged trying to find camouflage, super hero attire, and the worst, matching pajamas.

And again, Halloween. I know some people don’t celebrate Halloween. I love Jesus too. But I’ll still go to random strangers houses and get free candy. Okay? Okay. But at school, can we just have a dress up day? You know, dress up in your favorite costume? Please?

Every year seems to be dress as your favorite book character day and I’m over here thinking, “I spent $20 on a Black Panther costume and by golly that’s what my kids is wearing!” Or even worse, if I have spent actual time and labor making and putting something together… my kid might wear it for the next week. I worked hard! I am not making another costume for my child to be a book character.

But I digress.

We have been the busiest with costumes and outfits and snacks and parties. After much deliberating, I decided to make the littles some decorated cut-out sugar cookies to take to school. On Tuesday, the night before their big hoorah at school, I chucked that idea out the window and made some staple chocolate chip cookies.

Who even has time to mix and roll and cut and bake AND decorate? Apparently not me. Maybe for Christmas.

The kids only had half a day of school yesterday, which I think was pretty great for the teachers, who didn’t have to deal with antsy trick-or-treaters, pre trick-or-treating. It was also pretty good for parents. We had literally all afternoon to procrastinate before running around like crazy dressing our children at the last possible minute.

Kids costumes

Does anyone remember the days when we would trick-or-treat until 9 or 10 pm? Is there a mystical place where that still happens? Because here, the lights were off by 8:15. And we were forcibly finished.

The kids got plenty of candy, though, and they had plenty of fun. Our church’s Light The Night festival was scaled back because of bad weather but the kids still had a blast playing games, bouncing in bouncy houses, and going through mazes. And as usual, the food was amazing!

I made sure to go through all the bags of candy after the kids were asleep. We have to check for poison candy. Wink wink. But also, we really check for poison candy. I’m pleased to report that all seems to be well.

Today is only the second day of November and Starbucks is rolling out their holiday drinks. Bet that I will show up for that!

Now that Halloween is over, who’s putting up their Christmas tree? Let me know in the comments!
